Simple Morning Ritual

Whether you consider yourself a health nut or not, you’ve probably heard, read, seen and even tried this simple morning routine a dozen times. Lemon water has been touted as one of the simplest yet most effective ways you can take charge of your health, rev up your metabolism and help flush your body. Today we’re not here to try and sell you on the idea, but rather remind you why this daily routine will never go out of style!

You may be thinking, “add another element to my already crazy busy morning routine?”, but the way you begin your day is what truly sets you up for lasting health success. No matter how stressful your day may be, begin with this one step and notice how different you feel, physically and mentally when you have a positive health-focused start. And as one of our favourite health bloggers (Sarah Britton) says, start your day with warm water and lemon and “watch miracles happen”. We tend to think so as well.

The ‘how-to’ is pretty simple:

1. Put the kettle on and warm up some water
2. Pour water into your favourite mug and let cool slightly (you want warm water, not piping hot)
3. Squeeze a big old amount of fresh lemon into said mug (go wild here)
4. Stir, enjoy, and thank us later

In case you’ve forgotten, or perhaps haven’t come across the hundreds of articles tooting the lemon water horn, the following serves as a little refresher on why this morning ritual is an amazing lifelong habit.

 

KICKSTARTS DIGESTION. The warm water serves to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis – the waves of muscle contractions within the intestinal walls that keep things moving. Lemons and limes are also high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen ama, or toxins, in the digestive tract.

BALANCES PH. Lemons are an incredibly alkaline food, believe it or not. Yes, they are acidic on their own, but inside our bodies they’re alkaline. Lemons are one of the most alkalising foods for the body, and a good pH level is essential as too much acidity in the body can be inflammatory.

DETOXIFIES LIVER. This cup of goodness helps flush out the toxins in your body by enhancing enzyme function and stimulating your liver. It purifies and stimulates the liver by encouraging the production of bile, an acid required for digestion. Lemon water can also help control excess bile flow, decrease the amount of phlegm produced by the body and assist in dissolving gallstones.

BOOSTS IMMUNE SYSTEM. Drinking lemon water can help to support and nourish the immune system. It has antibacterial properties which can help the body to kill off microbes that cause a variety of illnesses. It also strengthens the lymphatic system by helping to cleanse and flush the lymph nodes in the body.

HELPS WITH WEIGHT LOSS. Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster. Detoxifying the liver, as mentioned above, also helps because the liver is the organ which metabolizes fat and produces bile.

REDUCES INFLAMMATION. For those who suffer from inflammatory conditions like arthritis, there is good news: adding lemon to drinking water has properties which can greatly reduce the inflammation. This is because lemon juice becomes alkaline once it has been metabolized and this alkalinity helps reduce acidity in the body — one of the main causes of inflammation to begin with.

HELPS CLEAR SKIN. The Vitamin C in lemons is anti-inflammatory, an anti-oxidant, and plays a huge role in collagen formation. This means that it protects you against wrinkles, skin inflammation and redness, and also can make a big difference in how fast your skin and blemishes heal.
